Ottawa County, MI (WGHN) – The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Michigan Department of Transportation Sunday evening on I-96 near the 16-mile marker in Polkton Township in a roadway hazard where the pavement was buckling.

At around 8:01 p.m. as deputies and first responders were managing traffic in the area, a 35-year-old female driver from Muskegon, traveling westbound on I-96, struck a Polkton Township Fire Department vehicle that was stationed on the highway to aid in directing traffic.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. No other injuries have been reported.

Pavement buckling due to heat, often referred to as “pavement blow-ups,” occurs because of thermal expansion. If the pressure becomes great enough, especially in older or weakened pavement, it can force sections of the road upward, leading to buckling or “blow-ups.”
