(Lansing, MI) – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is not going to revive the second-degree murder case against former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr. His trial ended in a mistrial after jurors could not agree if he was or wasn’t guilty in the April 2022 shooting death of Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop. Nessel’s office said Friday she would not take up the case.
In a statement, they say she recognizes how difficult a hung jury is for the victim’s family, but adds they do not operate “as an appellate prosecuting attorney over cases tried at the local level.”
