(Lansing, MI) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has released a draft study of Enbridge Energy’s proposed tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac for their Line 5 pipelines. The study says the tunnel “would have a beneficial cumulative effect on reduced risks of a petroleum leak in the Straits, and, when combined with one of the decommissioning sub-alternatives, improvements to water-based recreation.” Enbridge called the study a “significant milestone” and the “result of more than five years of rigorous and comprehensive permit review and stakeholder engagement.”

The Canadian company received support from former Governor Rick Snyder for the tunnel, but has been battling Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel in court.
