(Mackinac Island, MI) – Consumers Energy is scrambling to comply with a federal order keeping its last coal-fired power plant open for at least 90 more days. The J.H. Campbell Plant in West Michigan was set to shut down May 31st, years ahead of schedule, with demolition planned for next year. CEO Garrick Rochow says reviving the plant won’t be easy, noting expired coal contracts, missing rail cars, and displaced staff.
The Trump administration’s emergency order leaves the plant’s future beyond the 90 days uncertain. Rochow says the utility will spend the next three months working to bring it back online.
