(Mackinac Island, MI) – At the Mackinac Policy Conference, education leaders said Michigan’s K-12 schools face an accountability crisis. Detroit superintendent Nikolai Vitti called for better oversight and objective ways to measure student performance. Panelists agreed higher teacher pay, more classroom support, and equitable funding are key to improving outcomes. They also pushed for stronger statewide leadership and more control for the governor over education policy.
Michigan currently ranks near the bottom nationally in reading and math scores.
