Schurr Case In Limbo As Prosecutor Bows Out

(Grand Rapids, MI) — The future of the murder case against former Grand Rapids officer Christopher Schurr is up in the air. Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker says he’s done and won’t retry the case after a mistrial earlier this month.

The initial jury was leaning 10-to-2 in favor of acquittal. Now all eyes turn to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. Civil rights groups, including the Greater Grand Rapids NAACP and the Urban League of West Michigan, are urging her to step in and take over the prosecution. Nessel has said in the past she’s willing to take on police shooting cases if asked. So far, Becker says her office hasn’t reached out. Schurr shot and killed Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop in April 2022. Whether the state will pursue the case any further now rests with Nessel.

Eric Brown, the president and CEO of the Urban League of West Michigan, urges Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel to prosecute the case against former Grand Rapids officer Christopher Schurr.
