Tree planting project to benefit Ferrysburg

Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) –  The C3 Spiritual Community of Grand Haven has just a few more days for their tree planting project in May in the Tri-Cities.
C3’s Plant Up and Fly Right project will donate trees, this year to the City of Ferrysburg, to be planted in its city parks this fall. Members of the public who contribute $80 may sponsor the planting of an 8 foot to 12 foot tree (worth $160). Planting carbon-storing trees helps mitigate climate damage caused by carbon emissions in air flights and other sources. Just one tree planted removes 2,000 pounds of CO2 over a five-year period and neutralizes unintended climate damage. These will replace trees lost to the Emerald Ash borer blight and will beautify Tri-Cities parks. Spring Lake Village and the City of Grand Haven were previous beneficiaries of the project.
Hear the interview below with Rod Van Abbema of C3 and Will Montgomery, councilmember for the City of Ferrysburg below.
Ferrysburg Mayor Richard Carlson said, “We are excited to receive the trees from this year’s project, and we look forward to cooperating with the planting of the trees this fall in our city parks.” Sponsorship may honor a friend or family member by providing their name so that it may be noted in a planned recognition ceremony.
To sponsor, mail a check to “C3” with the notation “Plant Up” to PO Box 371, Grand Haven, MI 49417, call (616) 842-1985, or email frontdesk@c3westmichigan.org.
Ferrysburg Tree Board Chairperson Emily Stearley said, “Ferrysburg has been designated as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for several years, even being awarded the prestigious Growth Award this year. The Plant Up and Fly Right project is wonderful news for our city.” Specific funds within the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation (GHACF) have historically granted funds toward this project. A donor advised fund at the GHACF has committed to match up to $5,000 in contributions towards the tree planting project that are received by May 31st.
In 2019 and 2020, the Plant Up and Fly Right project planted 110 trees in Spring Lake Village and the City of Grand Haven. The name Plant Up and Fly Right derives from the song, “Straighten Up and Fly Right”, written in 1943 by Nat King Cole and recorded by The Andrews Sisters.
