Prosecutor, Defense React To Schurr Mistrial

(Grand Rapids, MI) – Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker and defense attorney Matt Borgula both say they hoped the jury could reach a verdict in the trial of Christopher Schurr. The former Grand Rapids police officer’s trial ended in a mistrial with the jury unable to reach a unanimous consensus. Borgula says the jury was “overwhelmingly in favor of acquittal and there were holdouts on the other side.”

Becker says the mistrial was not what anyone wanted.

Schurr was charged with second-degree murder for shooting and killing Patrick Lyoya during an April 2022 traffic stop when they were fighting over the officer’s Taser.
