Port Sheldon Twp. MI (WGHN) – The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a weapons complaint involving a 9-year-old elementary school student being in possession of a handgun on a West Ottawa Public School bus 15000 Block of Blair St. Port Sheldon Township.
Sheriff’s deputies became aware of the incident and began investigating on May 6, 2025 At that time the student who is from Port Sheldon Township was found to have been in possession of ammunition on the school bus. Further investigation by Sheriff’s School Resource deputies, detectives and school staff found that the same student had displayed the handgun on the school bus during the previous week of May 1, 2025. The gun was not believed to have been loaded at the time and school staff and students were not in danger.
The juvenile was turned over to his family and investigators continue to work with school staff during this investigation. There are no on-going safety concerns with this student. Detectives will also consult with the Ottawa County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office at the conclusion of the investigation to see if potential criminal charges are applicable for this incident.
