(Grand Rapids, MI) – Jurors remain deadlocked in former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr’s trial on a second-degree murder charge. He is charged for shooting and killing Patrick Lyoya in April 2022 during a traffic stop when the two were fighting over the officer’s Taser.
That is defense attorney Matthew Borgula, who says he’s not reading anything into how long it’s taking the jury to decide. Demonstrators supporting both Schurr and Lyoya’s family say they are encouraged by the time it is taking the jury and both sides feel the verdict will go their way. Jurors can find Schurr guilty of second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, or acquit him.
