(Grand Rapids, MI) – The future of former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr is now in the hands of the jury after his second-degree murder trial wrapped up yesterday. Schurr is charged in the shooting death of Patrick Lyoya in April 2022 when the two were fighting over the officer’s Taser during a traffic stop.
Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker says he tried to convince the jury to find Schurr guilty. Jurors have the choice of convicting Schurr of second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, or nothing.
Defense attorney Matt Borgula says Christopher Schurr was acting in self defense when he shot and killed Patrick Lyoya in April 2022.
