(Grand Rapids, MI) – The Kent County Prosecutor’s Office has rested its case as former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr faces a second-degree murder trial. His defense attorneys asked for the case to be dismissed with a directed verdict setting him free, but Circuit Court Judge Christina Mims disagreed.
The defense then called several current Grand Rapids officers to the stand, and Captain David Siver testified that the shooting of Patrick Lyoya was reasonable with Lyoya having the officer’s Taser in his hand when he was on the ground.
Siver is the department’s training commander and testified the suspect’s behavior was “active aggression.” The shooting happened during an April 2022 traffic stop.
