(Grand Rapids, MI) — An expert witness called by Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker says former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr created jeopardy when he chased after Patrick Lyoya in April 2022. South Carolina School of Law professor Seth Stoughton testified that Schurr exposed himself to “some unnecessary tactical risk” in chasing the man with a passenger still in Lyoya’s car during a traffic stop.
Stoughton says letting someone go free “is certainly better than getting into a fight and losing or getting shot in the back by an assailant that you couldn’t keep an eye on.” Schurr is charged with second-degree murder for killing Lyoya as they were struggling over the officer’s Taser.
