(St. Ignace, MI) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will fast-track permits for the Enbridge Energy tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac. They cite President Trump’s executive order in January saying the U.S. was too dependent on foreign energy sources. The Canadian company had received approval by former Governor Rick Snyder to move its Line 5 pipeline on the lakebed under the Mackinac Bridge to an underground tunnel, but current Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel have fought that agreement in court.
The Sierra Club, Great Lakes Business Network, and environmental law firm Earthjustice all criticized the decision to fast-track the permits.
