(South Haven, MI) – The city council in South Haven wants more information from city staff on the costs of establishing a new lifeguard program. A report from a consultant estimates the lifeguard pay would be 234-thousand-dollars a year without benefits with lifeguard pay averaging 25-dollars an hour.
Chris Brewer of U.S. Holidays says having lifeguards on the beach can be successful.
Equipment and uniforms are estimated at 20-thousand-dollars for the first year and ten-thousand-dollars a year after that, and lifeguard towers would cost between 16-thousand and 75-thousand-dollars every 20 years. The council voted unanimously to have city staff give them an itemized list for equipment prices before they make a decision. Lifeguards have not been on the beaches in South Haven since 2001.
