(Kalamazoo, MI) – A jackknifed semi on eastbound Interstate 94 near Climax Township in Kalamazoo County yesterday morning is being seen as proof by the Michigan Department of Transportation that highway cable barriers are working. The semi was seen with a cable tight under its hood, with the barrier preventing the truck from going into the westbound lanes. MDOT’s Nick Schirripa says they have spent one-point-five-million-dollars in the last five years on repairs, replacing around 300 feet of cable and thousands of posts.
He says the maintenance costs are “right where we expect them to be,” and says the money has been well worth the lives saved by the cables.
