GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Today, U.S. Congresswoman Hillary Scholten (MI03) met with the U.S. Coast Guard at the Grand Haven Coast Guard Station to observe a critical ice rescue training session. During the visit, Scholten reaffirmed her commitment to supporting Coast Guard personnel and ensuring they have the resources needed to carry out their life-saving missions.
“The brave men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard put their lives on the line to protect our communities, especially during the harsh winter months when ice rescues are a core mission on the Great Lakes,” said Rep. Scholten. “Seeing their dedication firsthand today, it is clear that even in the most extreme conditions, the Coast Guard is committed to protecting our waterways and providing a swift response to those in distress. We must continue to invest in the resources necessary and to support our service members who are vital to ensuring safety on our lakes.”
The U.S. Coast Guard is a world leader in ice rescue missions. Over the past decade, the 9th Coast Guard District has responded to more than a thousand rescue cases, saving hundreds of lives. The Grand Haven Coast Guard Station remains at the forefront of these operations, demonstrating the importance of maintaining robust ice rescue capabilities.
As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee, Scholten is a steadfast advocate for strengthening icebreaking and rescue capabilities in the region. In November 2024, she pressed Coast Guard officials on their plans to acquire a second heavy Great Lakes Icebreaker, an asset crucial for maintaining maritime safety and security. She has also pushed for additional federal funding to bolster the Coast Guard’s resources.
The demonstration in Grand Haven highlighted the rigorous training and preparedness of Coast Guard personnel as they navigate extreme conditions to save lives. Scholten commended their service and reiterated her commitment to working alongside the Coast Guard to enhance ice rescue and icebreaking capabilities in West Michigan and beyond.
