Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Every Spring dredging takes place in Grand Haven. Mayor Bob Monetza tells WGHN news that EGLE (Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy) has put in a new requirement to sample the dredge in the river bottom for PFAS.
“Because there is PFAS in the river and the sediment, it washes downstream from farther upstream. We know we have some on our site Harbor Island as well but that’s pretty much on that site. So that interacts with the Corps of Engineers because they have the responsibility to do the sampling. They would have to coordinate and the city is caught in the middle on this because we need to have it done. We need to have our port facilities active and operating efficiently.”
Monetza says dredging is in a holding pattern right now and is now pushed out for at least a year. Full interview here.
“We’re starting to shallow up a bit in the river. We’ve had some problems. Eventually it’s going to lead to freighters coming in with lessers loads. So then the economics of it becomes a little more doubtful. We have to sort out these permits and this testing requirement.”
State Rep. Greg VanWoerkom, State Senator Roger Victory and Rep. Hillary Scholten have been contacted by the city to see if there are any other options
