(DETROIT)-The long rebuild of the Detroit Red Wings will continue with a new bench boss.

Thursday, the team fired coach Derek Lalonde.

Wings’ Executive Vice-President & General Manager Steve Yzerman announced Todd McLellan will take over the job.

McLellan, who most recently led the Los Angeles Kings before being fired this past February, has a record of 598-412-134 in 16 seasons with the Kings, Sharks, & Oilers.

He was previously an assistant coach with the Wings under former coach Mike Babcock from 2005-2008.

Yzerman says McLellan has a multi-year contract with the club.

Detroit has only 13 wins and is second to last in the Eastern Conference.

The “new look” Wings take on “Original Six” rival Toronto Friday night at Little Caesar’s Arena.
