Federal Judge Tosses Lawsuit From Former Ottawa County Administrator

By Mary Ellen Murphy Dec 5, 2024 | 7:36 AM

(Grand Rapids, MI) – A federal lawsuit against Ottawa County filed by former County Administrator John Gibbs has been dismissed by a federal judge. The ruling by the judge says Gibbs did not have protection under the First Amendment when he was acting as the administrator and criticized the county’s legal team. Gibbs also claimed the state’s whistleblower protection act was violated with his firing, but the judge says that allegation needs to be proven at the state court level.

The federal lawsuit cannot be re-filed.
