New Study Explains Why People Like Falling Asleep To TV

By Mary Ellen Murphy Nov 19, 2024 | 8:03 AM

(Undated) – A new study is shedding light on why so many people like to fall asleep to a movie or a show. Cleveland Clinic psychologist Chivonna Childs says falling asleep to the TV or something streaming is soothing and calming, similar to white noise. She adds that the sleeping ritual also helps distract people from racing thoughts. However, Childs warns that the blue light from a TV or device may lead to less quality sleep, as it can prevent the body from releasing melatonin. She suggests listening to calming music instead or reading, journaling or meditating right before bedtime.

Childs says but if you absolutely have to watch something, make sure it’s something light and not too intense like true crime.
