(Church Creek, MD) – Maryland Governor Wes Moore will posthumously commission abolitionist Harriet Tubman as a one-star general in the Maryland National Guard on this Veterans Day. In addition to being a conductor on the Underground Railroad to bring slaves to freedom, Tubman served in the Union Army as a spy, scout, nurse and cook once the Civil War began. During the last General Assembly session, state lawmakers passed legislation allowing the governor to award a commission, appointment or promotion to an awardee after their death.
Governor Moore, Major General Janeen Birckhead and Tubman’s descendants are scheduled to take part in a ceremony at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitor Center in Church Creek.
