(Grand Rapids, MI) – Cases of whooping cough are currently surging across Michigan. That’s according to the CDC, which says that so far this year there has been 473 confirmed cases of whooping cough. Last year at this time, there were only 58 cases in Michigan. Babies under a year old are at greatest risk of developing whooping cough and having severe complications, including apnea and pneumonia.
Health experts blame the surge on missed vaccinations, a trend that began during the COVID-19 pandemic, plus mask-wearing that lowered transmission rates.
