Muskegon, MI – (WGHN) In a heartwarming commitment to Big Lake Humane Society’s mission, Shelter Manager Velvet Lyght will be bunking in the kennels overnight with one of the shelter’s most deserving residents. Cruiser, a senior dog who’s been patiently waiting for a forever home. The overnight stay will take place on Friday, October 11th, and will be streamed live on Facebook
and TikTok starting at 9 p.m.
This event stems from a promise made during Big Lake Humane Society’s ‘Jordan’s Way’ Fundraiser last month, where it was mentioned by the host that if the organization met its
fundraising goal, Velvet would spend a night in the kennels. The team and community didn’t forget – and neither did Velvet.

Cruiser, a gentle 9-year-old dog, has faced a difficult journey. After spending more than four years in a shelter, he found a loving home only to return to Big Lake Humane Society in June after his owner passed away. Since then, Cruiser has not received a single adoption application. This upcoming event will spotlight Cruiser’s story and give the community a chance to help him find a forever home.
“I first met Cruiser when he was two and a half. Now he’s almost nine, and we’re determined to make sure the rest of his life is filled with love and comfort,” said Velvet Lyght. “This event not only honors our fundraiser commitment, but also helps raise awareness for our long-stay residents who deserve to find homes.”
Cruiser’s adoption fee has been reduced to $50 this month as part of the BISSELL Pet Foundation Empty the Shelters event, spearheaded by Cathy Bissell. Big Lake hopes this effort will finally help Cruiser find the family he’s been waiting for.
