Why I Say “Mabuhay” At The Start Of JESSE BRUCE LIVE!

(GRAND HAVEN)-Every weekday, a little after 3 PM, “Rise,” by Herb Alpert, begins thumping to let the audience know JESSE BRUCE LIVE! is on the air at WGHN.

I “try” to kick off with a witty comment, setting the stage for the show’s signature greeting, “Mabuhay, Everybody!”

Mabuhay is a word from the Filipino language which means, essentially, “to live” or “live long.”

There are many subdialects of Filipino (my wife and daughter speak Bisaya,) and each language variant gives Mabuhay a slightly different but always positive meaning.

It is similar to “Aloha” or “Cheers.”

On our recent vacation in the Philippines, I found this concession stand on the island of Boracay, with Mabuhay proudly scrawled across the top, welcoming customers.

Plus, it is a fun word to say.

Mabuhay everybody!
