Whitmer Signs Bill Designating May 2 As Negro Leagues Day In Michigan

(Lansing, MI) – May 2nd will now be known in Michigan as Negro Leagues Day. Governor Whitmer signed a bill yesterday on the national holiday of Juneteenth that recognizes the liberation of the last people enslaved two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist says as a Black man and a Detroit native, he is particularly proud to see the Negro Leagues be recognized by the state.

The Detroit Stars were among the eight teams that started the league in 1920.
