Rep. Scholten Named “Fiscal Hero” for Bipartisan Work to Rein in Government Spending

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  Rep. Hillary Scholten (MI-03) was named a “Fiscal Hero” by Fix the Debt, a project of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, for her bipartisan work to reign in the national debt and be a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars. Rep. Scholten was one of just 10 House Democrats to receive the honor and the only Democrat from Michigan. She will receive the award at a special ceremony this evening in Washington, D.C.

In Congress, Rep. Scholten has cosponsored and voted for several pieces of legislation to reign in federal spending and balance the budget. Rep. Scholten is an original co-sponsor of the Fiscal Commission Act, which would create a bipartisan fiscal commission in Congress to study long-term taxing and spending plans to ensure a healthy and sustainable budget. She also voted in favor of the RECLAIM Taxpayer Funds Act to claw back unspent Paycheck Protection Program loans from the COVID-19 pandemic, which passed the House in 2023. On the House Small Business Committee, she works hard to ensure that the SBA responsibly handles taxpayer funds, to maximize their use to the advantage of small businesses that need them most.

“I’m a frugal Dutch mom from West Michigan – being responsible with our dollars is in my blood. West Michiganders work too hard for their money, and Congress must protect their hard-earned dollars. Actions speak louder than words, and over the last year in Congress, I’ve worked tirelessly in a bipartisan way to fund West Michigan’s priorities and bring investments home while reducing the national debt,” said Rep. Scholten. “It’s not every day that a Democrat wins an award for being a fiscal conservative, which makes this recognition by Fix the Debt all the more special. My Grandpa Scholten would be so proud! I’d like to thank Fix the Debt and the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget for this honor and for working to create a more sustainable future for our country.”

“Fiscal responsibility is a stewardship, not only for Americans today but for generations of Americans to come. We applaud this year’s Fiscal Heroes, including Representative Scholten, for having the courage to prioritize our fiscal health and work towards achieving a more sustainable debt trajectory. Through legislation, speeches, engagement back home, and tough political decisions, these Members of Congress have distinguished themselves as leaders on these key issues, and we are honored to recognize and applaud them for their efforts. We look forward to seeing how these Fiscal Heroes will build on the momentum in the past year to make even greater strides going forward,” said Maya MacGuineas, President of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and head of Fix the Debt.

About the Fiscal Hero Award:

According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, Fiscal Heroes are awarded each Congress to recognize policymakers working to improve the nation’s fiscal situation and fix the budget process. Fiscal Heroes have distinguished themselves by pushing their party leaders to make debt a priority, leading bipartisan efforts to work through policy options to fix the debt and the budget process, taking responsible votes, participating in fiscally focused events, using their town hall meetings to engage and educate constituents, delivering floor speeches to raise awareness about the issue, advocating to keep tough choices on the table, and introducing legislation to improve the budget process and the nation’s fiscal position.
