Resolution Passes: Investigation into whistleblower allegations concerning the Board of Light and Power

Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – A resolution to seek an investigation into whistleblower allegations concerning the Board of Light and Power passes at Monday’s night’s City Council Meeting.

It was put on the agenda by council members Ryan Cummins and Karen Lowe at Grand Haven’s City Council meeting Monday evening so that a special meeting did not have to be scheduled for the resolution.
Mayor McNally and Council member Fritz voted no and the resolution passed. On the ballot in November voters will decide whether or not to transfer the City’s electric utility facilities and services to the control and direction of the City Council. The Board of Light and Power was not made aware of the allegations until the agenda was being published.

The accusations are:

A coordinated attempt to delete email records related to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.
The deletion of documents and email records to avoid disclosure of FOIA’d information.
Attempting to avoid compliance with the requirements of the Open Meetings Act.
Offering false and misleading statements to employees regarding a proposed charter amendment aimed at dissolving the BLP.

An new organization called BLP Charter Change Coalition (BLPCCC), is proposing  to transfer the City’s electric utility facilities and services to the control and direction of the City Council. BLPCCC member Field Reichardt told WGHN news that it will also create an Energy Services Advisory Commission., and to dissolve the Board of Light and Power.

The election is November 7th, 2023.
