Update on Grand Haven Lighthouse

Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Progress continues on the South Pier Entrance Light Rehabilitation Project.  The City of Grand Haven recently hosted representatives of the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) so they could see the project progress first-hand.

According to the recent Facebook post,  Smith’s Waterproofing made progress on concrete removal at the delaminated and spalled areas on the south and west elevations of the entrance light structure. Patch preparation and forming have started along the south elevation, and some concrete replacement has been performed.

Dave Karpin is President of the Grand Haven Lighthouse Conservancy. A Museum is in the works and Karpin says he’s looking for lighthouse artifacts.

“I’m gonna ask your folks if they have any Coast Guard artifacts, pictures  or notes of what went on at the lighthouse for them, we’d love to hear from them. You can contact the website or contact the City of Grand Haven. The City Manager has my contact information and she is also the secretary of the Conservancy so she can also take those. So we’re gathering artifacts up and it’s gonna be an interpretative center for the life saving service that was stationed across the river in that big white building, the old Coast Guard station. We’ll have some information about them, we’ll have information about the light ships that were built over at Johnson Boiler. At the end of the 1800’s they actually build light ships for the Great Lakes.”

An open house is still scheduled for what happens to be National Lighthouse Day August 7th.

Safety measures remain in place to keep as much of the pier open to the public as possible while maintaining safety. Please refrain from walking around the safety barriers and into the work area.
