Whitmer To Lawmakers: Negotiate Budget Deal Now

(Lansing, MI) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer is urging state lawmakers to find common ground on the Fiscal Year 2026 budget and do it now. The Democratically-controlled state Senate passed its plan this spring, but that was well before federal spending cuts were approved, and the Republican-controlled House passed theirs three weeks ago with five-billion-dollars in cuts.

The state is two weeks away from a state government shutdown if the budget is not approved. Michigan State Police would get a 50-million-dollar cut under the House budget, and county revenue sharing would also take a big hit.

State employee Ray Nesser says he and his colleagues are worried.

UAW Local 6000 president Rachel Dickinson says the budget needs to be done to avoid state government shutting down.
