(Lansing, MI) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s speech today will include comments on how the federal tariffs are impacting Michigan farmers. A report released by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says soybean meal exports are down 46-percent in the past year, wheat exports have dropped 89-percent, apple exports are down 58-percent, and cherry exports have fallen by 62-percent. Canada, China, and other countries have responded to President Trump’s tariffs by putting retaliatory tariffs of up to 140-percent on American agricultural goods and the export markets have dried up as a result.
Whitmer says the issue is putting pressure on lawmakers to get a balanced budget passed to help farmers and food producers.
