(Sault Ste. Marie, MI) – The shipwreck of the Western Reserve has been found in Lake Superior, roughly 60 miles northwest of Whitefish Point. The 300-foot steel steamer went down in 1892, killing 27 people and was considered one of the safest ships of its time. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society found it using marine sonic technology.
Only Wheelsman Harry Stewart of Algonac, Michigan survived the sinking of the ship and the victims included the ship’s owner, Peter Minch, his wife, their two children, sister-in-law and her daughter.
